Heavy metal band names!

This is a great example of how one should make sure to use a font that is easily read by the general public. with font choice it is important that they are easily read no matter how they are put together. This shows how easy it is to mess up with font choice.

If you don't cringe at this image then I have absolutely no respect for you as a person. This design implements what you should never do when using type. First of all the "WE" is crushing everything else in the design and the font chosen is blocky and mostly illegible. The spacing between the letters could also be tracked out a bit more in order to seem a bit more readable.

We're in the T-Shirt business now

Don't worry about the t-shirt as much as the design itself though. Although, it is one fine ass shirt. Anyways this is another example of shaping text in order to portray an image or a specific idea. This artist manipulated the word illusion in order to make the image appear as an optical illusion. A great use of typographic elements.

Text alignment and how it benefits the greater good. In order to have a good design equal understanding must be present. Whether it is a bad layout or poor font choice, some designs can be lacking. This specific design has used a poor choice by having a pattern background with diagonally placed text laid out over it. Having font placed diagonally can pay off. However it can sometimes be extremely difficult to read depending on the rest of the design.

Typographic Hierarchy

This blog installment will be discussing typographic hierarchy in order to show the importance of certain words or meaning. Concert posters have always been a showcasing of typographic hierarchy and this poster just missed the note. It is important that the most important objects should stand out, whether this is done by changing the font, color, or sizing. This designer correctly changed the size of the font but it looks weird being placed in the middle of the events. There should be a proper display of this where the most important event will be either placed at the top or bottom, not the middle of the flyer/poster.

This blog post is another inclusion on text manipulation. This form of text has been stretched and manipulated in order to be seen as a heel that is being marketed by a fashion store. Instead of having a physical object they let the text be put in place of that object in order to push the final meaning that there is a shoe sale happening. This is a great use of typographic manipulation and it is a great technique to have once becoming a graphic designer.

Welcome to Whose Font is it Anyway! Where the serifs are made up and the legibility doesn't matter!Font choice is the heart and soul of typography, If there is a bad font in use there can only be bad typography. The main point of font use is to have continuity and legibility throughout the entire design, without this the design fails and its purpose is lost. Make sure to use proper font selection when designing.

Bad Typography 2: Electric Boogaloo

looking at  bad typography is like like watching a remake of a classic movie. You know youre going to have to look at it and its going to be so, so, so, damn painful. In this image displayed it shows how a design can be hurt simply by not adjusting tracking. Tracking pertains to the spacing between the each different part of text flowing horizontally. By failing to adjust the tracking this text is jumbled and illegible at pints. Only you can prevent tracking issues, kids.

While this design is meant to be a parody of what bad designs look like, it is still important to focus on proper alignment and spacing in typographic designs.  Proper spacing is important in design in order to maintain flow and to ensure that the design itself is legible and uniform.  Take this design as as what you shouldn't do. EVER!

Using empty space for the greater good.

While this not the biggest use of negative space, it still shows basic use of this technique. By using shapes instead of actual letters this person used shapes and negative space in order to make it appear that there are letters there. Negative space can be the most powerful tool in a designers arsenal it, and it is important for designers to have a clear understanding of this. Overall this is a very cool use of typography.

BLOG POST #35! Were gonna need a bigger font...Get it? No. Okay then.

This poster is a design made by a fan of this film franchise. While this design is extremely simple it still is reminiscent of the move. By using the A in word jaws this designer was able to replicate the classic fin out of water scene. This is an excellent use of typographic skills.

If you use bad typography you're gonna have a bad time. But seriously, what does this even say? Using fonts Like these is a bad move in pretty much every situation, unless you're trying to make something look weird.

Restaurant menu BANANZA!!!!111!!11!!

For one of my last installations for my menu blogs I wanted to find one that I loved looking at. I would order the shit out of the food on this menu. I dont care if I like, or if it sounds good, this type is calling my name. There is great organization aside from some of the blank space that could have been utilized.  I truly love how the coors repeat themselves multiple times on this menu. It shows a strong amount of continuity. A- Royal Revolver.

MENU DESIGN NUMERO DOS!

This is the second installation in my menu design blog posts. Rather than sticking to the conformity of using multiple paged menus, I decided to go for the good ol single page spread. I actually prefer single page menus to multi page menus, its easier to look through and requires no frustrating page flipping. This one page menu utilizes a large amount of different design elements as well as different fonts. Some of the symbols could have been left out with no damage done to the design at all. Overall this was a great showing of how to utilize a small amount of space and fit in a large amount of information.

FRUIT ART EDITION!!!!1111!!11!???

If you thought typography was limited to paper then get out of the damn room! This person used cut fruit in order to spell the word "Juicy". The only problem I had with this is that it did take my eyes a minute to adjust and figure out exactly what it says.  Cool design but its a bit too crazy for my taste

 MENU DESIGN
Since we will be doing designs for a Japanese restaurant I figured I might as well look at some deigns that represent formal dining. I like this menu for the most part. I feel that it has a very strong force of organization and is able to separate the items very effectively. This separation is brought around by different colored text as well as a different font all together. Ironically the only things that are bothering me is the color selection. Velvet and gold make me feel like this menu is wearing a monocle and is about to blow smoke in my face from its theoretical cuban cigar. Other than the color selection I feel that this design worked very well.

Typographic Blog Post 31

I chose to use this image because I felt this designer was able to put a large amount of detail and depth solely using text manipulation. By tilting and using different manipulation methods, this designer was able to pass off a very impressive image. While some of the text could have been changed this is a very impressive use of typograohy.

Typography Blog Post #29

I chose to use this image in order to discuss how using different fonts, colors, and sizing can help to create emphasis in a typographic element. By using a bold font in relation to a normal font it can help separate words that are intended to be more important.  In addition to using different fonts or different sizes, using color (especially complementary colors) to separate some words or phrases. Learning how to do this effectively can be a powerful weapon in ones arsenal when using typography.

Blog Post #27

I chose to use this piece of typographic art in order to cover how to properly use text to have multiple meaning and elements. This phrase "Ink and water don't mix" is further pushed by you how the designer made it look like the ink is running all over the page, enforcing how these two don't elements don't function together. This is a great example of how to have stand alone text without it feeling alone since there is no picture or design accompanying it.  Unlike in and water, these design elements mix very well. I hope the corniness doesn't make everyone cringe.

MORE LOGOS!!!!

Get your seat belt bucked because he comes part deux of my typographic blog. For this blog post I decided to cover another logo that utilized typographic elements as well as a large amount of empty space. This logo is obviously representing something sandwich related as we can tell by both the name and shape of the black space underneath the text. I really love the use of the rustic font that looks worn in. I also love the use of a simplistic shape to form the sandwich. Overall this is an effective use of simple design that worked out very well.

Typographic Logo blog post

For my last blog post I am going to discuss another clever use of text manipulation in order to reflect the basic idea of the selected logo. I chose this specific logo because it uses a great job at showing the meaning behind the logo while still being extremely legible and informative. The simplistic design also lends itself to the idea that less can sometimes mean more and that one should try to prevent themselves from flaunting fancy or elaborate text and making their design more complicated then they need to be in the first place.

Logo manipulation

For this blog post I am going to be discussing text manipulation involved in creating eye catching an exciting logos. For this logo the designer made the awesome decision to manipulate the text to completely reflect the logo title. Being able to have that message so clearly present yet gently hidden is a profound ability most designers need to obtain. While I know I'm falling head over heels over a four legged beast made out of type I can definitely say that this logo is an awesome use of typography.

Business Card Blog Posts

I like this business card and I probably shouldn't but what can ya do. I chose this card to show that less can sometimes be more. The slice throughout the title is to represent the name of the firm or designer. It is very important to convey a message in the text rather than just having a multitude of type present. The simple design works out extremely well in my opinion.

Business Card Blog

I chose this business card to showcase what you shouldnt do when making a business card centered around typographic elements. I've seen a bunch of designs that use this same technique of text going in different directions. The truth of the matter is that while it may look cool, it is very distracting to look at. However the use of different sized fonts and colors helps to offset this card and make it a little bit more appealing.

I chose to pick a different medium to discuss for my typography blog, this time its business cards. I will most likely be covering a few business cards in this blog of my next posts. I chose this specific design because I felt that the designer used a variation of colors, text, and fonts to make an appealing and interesting business card design. The fact that the text is the centerpiece of the design rather than having a huge elaborate design pinned on the card. It shows how important typography is in every design.

STAR WARS EDITION

This picture uses text and other objects in order to form the helmet of a stormtrooper completely out of various quotes from The Empire Strikes Back.  I chose to use this poster solely to show how important it is to use elements of context to make up an image in order to further push parts of the story. The simplistic look of this image helps separate it from the others and appear more interesting. By using different sizes of text and different fonts they were able to maneuver these lines of text in order to make a more form fitting image in the end.

This is a typographic poster collaboration of all of Martin Scorsese's fims all rolled into one textual element. This artist made a handgun uses the titles of all of his various films over the years. Through different type fonts, spaces and colors this designer made a strong showing of typographic use. The white text on the black background only adds more contrast and makes this piece even more interesting.  A very good showing of text manipulation.

I found this specific book cover very interesting. By wrapping the text around the book it helps force the reader to look at the entire cover. This also interesting because it goes against the norm and makes for a more eye catching object. The only thing I am unsure of is the use of the smaller text to provide the synopsis. Overall a very cool appearance and look.

Boook Cover Blog

I chose to write a blog post about this cover to show how sometimes text can become jumbled and unreadable. While I understand that this is a different language it doesn't change my opinion of this design at all. The use of large black space was their downfall. There is too much weight and blockiness being drawn to the top and bottom in addition to the compact text feeling crushed even more.

Bad blog post #3

While I do appreciate what this person is trying to do It was executed poorly. Instead of melding the letters together a simple line down the mirror would have given the appearance of a reflection and been more effective. The simplistic font is working for this piece in order to tie it together which I feel is a strong point for this piece.

As far as forming objects with type this is a pretty lack luster job. I do appreciate that this person chose star wars as their subject matter however I this person used multiple text to form the object instead of large letters it may have worked a bit better in my opinion. I also feel that if this text was over a gray or slightly dark background it would add a great amount of contrast and help make everything stand out.

Bad Typography

Now that weve gone over some good examples of typography lets go over some of the bad examples. This one looks like its trying a bit too hard. The font that this person made doesnt have any uniform look other than looking goofy as all hell. The change in font size is also very unsettling and confusing..Other than having good contrast I feel that not much is working for this piece.

I chose this book cover because It shows the use of different layouts as well as different variants of text manipulation. Instead of using traditional text this person chose to use chalk in order to give it a more realistic look. This text also reflects what looks like to be the overall theme of the book. Overall a very nice use of typography and various other design elements. The only other things I would have liked to see was a bit more use of color for contrast.

I actually really enjoy this book cover. The text looks like it was haphazardly made with a paintbrush, and I think it was pretty damn successful. The changing font size and the color variation create a nice contrast that separates this cover from many others. The only thing I dont like too much is how the barcode is kind of just thrown in there like some kind of sticker.

I love this book cover. Even though its not overly detailed I find that it uses the content found in the book and reflects that onto the cover and combines it with the text successfully. I have always loved when designers find a new was to use text in order to portray a graphical element and I feel this assigner did a fantastic job in doing so. With the simple yet intricate design I definitely feel that this is an excellent use of typography. I also feel that the bold blocky font helped push the idea of "Industry" one more step forward.

Book cover entry

I like the current typographic styles that are displayed on this cover.  While some may find it jarring to see the words broken up I feel that if used properly it is very effective with moving the eye around the cover and forcing the reader to look at the different pieces of text that are displayed.  I do have a fie problems with this cover though. Since these letters are changed or made out to shapes some of the text is a little bit hard to read. The larger text also does crush the names of the author on the bottom of the cover. Overall I feel that the use of text and white space worked for this design.

I chose to use this book cover to both poke fun at and critique. As a book cover for a typography tutorial this shows a lack of understanding for text arrangement. The color choice is also a bit distracting to me. Overall I feel that this cover shows what not to do with typography. What is working for me is the font isn't as bad as the rest of the piece in relation to text use.

Book Cover Blog #1

For the next few blog entries I'm going to be covering a few book covers that use a large amount of typographic elements in order to gain some additional information for our next project that will be due shortly.

This book is called The Alchemist written by Michael Scott.
For this book cover I assume the author or artist designing the cover of the book was taking some of the sci-fi elements from the book and using it to manipulate their text to represent the book. I do like the style of the text but It can get a little bit jumbled and hard to read due to how close the words are placed together. The font itself isn't bad but the placement is lacking in a few areas unfortunately.

Typography Blog Post #6 Restaurant Bag EDITION!
These take-out bags belong to the Mexican chain restaurant Chortle. Besides making me absurdly hungry I feel no outward attachment to this layout. I find it incredibly busy and frantic. There is no consistent font or size and it just looks crazy.  I know, its only purpose is to hold the delicious food until its devoured, but come one man! This thing has more words than the declaration of independence. I do like the rustic look of it and the little pieces of art displayed on the bag in order to give it a more friend look to the customers. Now excuse me while I go to Chipotle to eat my feelings.

Ive seen a lot of these type of typographic images lately. This specific style uses multiple words pertaining to the subject matter and rearranges them in order to create a more art-like image. This image is depicting a mans face. I've seen many bad attempts at this style and I will most likely cover them on my blog. This attempt was done very well in my opinion. Unlike others this graphic properly uses words with correct spacing and clarity. The contrast between the text and background also flow very well and form and effective project.

This. This is confusing. I understand where this person was coming from trying to make this piece unique and special. Event/Flyer

For the last post relating to the event flyers and poster I chose one that I don't like all that much. I feel this kind of old timey classic design has been overused so much that the horse has been beaten dead for many years. What I don't like about this is how bland it is. It also doesn't really tell me what kind of music this is going to be. However, this poster does have a leg to stand on with its layout and text placement. The use of different fonts worked out well as well as the placement of logos. Even though the placement went well it still feels all of the text is boxed in by the banners.

Pros:
-Placement was relatively successful
-Logos and branding came through

Cons:
-Color palate was bland and boring. Extremely washed out in my opinion.
-Overused aspects.
-Doesn't tell me anything at all about the music.

Event flyer/poster Post #2

Blog Entry#1Event Flyer/Poster

Since were doing this project on the Kinetik Music Concert I Figured I might as well critique the 'would have been' flyer for this upcoming festival that unfortunately got cancelled.Overall I like this flyer, but not for any of the background aspects in this piece. I like how well the text is layed out. Unfortunately it does seem a little bit smashed together at time. The only other gripe I really have is that the they could have expanded the border so that all the text couldnt have been smashed and used all of the empty space in the back for some breathing room.

Pros:
-Good layout
-Smooth and concise color scheme
-the font is connected well throughout the entire flyer

Cons:
-The text can feel compacted at some points.
- A little bit of open space could have been used for the rest of the flyer.

Blog Entry#1
Event Flyer/Poster

For my first post I decided to use a poster from a concert that has been close to my heart for many years. This is a poster from Warped tour 2013. There are multiple things I like about this poster

Pros:
1.)The use of space is dispersed very well. The pictures dont suffocate the text much like other posters do.
2.)The designer used multiple colored fonts to separate all of the text into each section.
3.) Use of white space worked well.

Cons:
-Some blank space could have  been utilized.
-Different fonts could have been used for headliners.
